This presentation is a look at how NECB 2020 and future energy codes are impacting our building industry and the way we design buildings. Jacob believes that we have reached a tipping point of what is considered risky and will discuss the implications of building traditional systems in a world rapidly moving away from fossil fuels. He will go over some details of NECB 2020, the changes from NECB 2017, the impacts, and what it means for building envelopes and mechanical systems. We’ll discuss future changes in energy codes (as this is the last one technically) and what they mean for design teams and clients. The presentation will also offer a path forward for sustainable buildings and how to achieve really high energy targets very easily.

Jacob Komar, P.Eng. CGD, Principal, Revolve Engineering Inc.
Jacob is the Principal and lead mechanical engineer at Revolve Engineering Inc. and is a specialist in Net Zero building design, energy modelling and geothermal systems. Jacob has helped design over fifteen Net Zero buildings and more than 50 commercial geothermal systems on a variety of projects ranging from multi-story commercial office buildings to apartment buildings and government facilities. Jacob started his HVAC career in Virginia working for a leading green design firm, gaining experience in both traditional as well as green HVAC design. Upon returning to Edmonton, Jacob continued to pursue his passion for green design by focusing most of his energy on renewable systems including geothermal, solar thermal, heat recovery systems as well as energy modelling. Today, Jacob focuses solely on green building consulting, energy modelling, Net Zero building designs and renewable mechanical systems (including geothermal). Jacob’s passion for designing sustainable, energy-efficient buildings is evident in each of his projects and he always strives to push the envelope in energy efficient designs.
Jacob is actively involved in the green community, serving on the City of Edmonton’s Energy Transition and Climate Resilience Advisory Committee (ETCRC). Jacob is also the president and founding member of the Western Canadian Geo association (WCGeo).
